Here are the notes I took from the Underwater Photography Workshop
Problems In the Field
- water magnifies everything
- the deeper you go, you lose colour
- fish see in an ultraviolet spectrum
- water absorbs all red
- in order to see 'our' colours, you need to introduce light
- you need to get close to your subject, use either a wide angle lens (16mm) or macro (105mm)
- Have to have strong diving skills and buoyancy control
- diving qualifications are a must
Housing for photographic gear
- Polycarbonate Housing
- Aluminium
Some good brands include
- CNC
- SooBull
Lighting
- Underwater strobes - connected by cables to the camera
- The camera to strobe distance is important as there are a lot of particles in the water that will reflect the light back onto the camera
- Position the strobes to the sides and behind the subject as not to illuminate the dirty water in front of the subject. This setup can be seen in the diagram below.
